Ladies and gentlemen, today we have the pleasure to introduce Marie-Lorraine Wright, Amsterdam Fashion TV’s new international correspondent based in Bali!
Marie-Lorraine Wright, for her friends Mariel, was born in Miami (Florida). She studied TV and Radio Broadcasting Journalism to become an anchor person, and during her studies interned at CNN Miami. Shortly after her graduation she was scouted by modelling agency Michele Pommier Models and offered a position with CNN Miami. She decided to give modelling a try and, for the next 12 years, she worked as a model for catwalks, TV commercials and advertising campaigns.
A few years later she moved to New York where she was recruited as director and scout for a boutique-style Manhattan modelling agency. Everything was great until 9/11, a turning point in Mariel’s life and a wake up call. She decided to cut down on work and focus more on her personal life. Within a few months she found love and started a relationship that moved her to Paris. Very Carrie and Sex and the City, right? A year later, she had a daughter; Kennedy Marie, now 10. Mariel describes her as funny and gorgeous, and considers her the main achievement in her life!
After a few years in Paris, Mariel felt it was time for a new adventure. Within a few weeks time she packed up her life in Paris and moved with her daughter to Bali, Indonesia. When I ask Mariel -Why Bali?- she tells me that her best friend, also an ex model, had moved there to open a yoga studio and her enthusiasm convinced her to join her. Completely crazy, as by then Mariel had never even been to Bali! But she needed a change, so she went.
In Mariel’s family women had always made their won clothes as for them it was difficult to buy off the rack. Mariel’s first hand knowledge of making her own clothes combined with her modelling experience and jetsetter lifestyle inspired her to create her own fashion label “Mariel’s Boudoir”, in the city of Dempasar.
Once she thought she was finally settled, Mariel fell in love with a man who was on vacation in Bali. Seven months later she was moving with her daughter to Amsterdam to join him. She began working as Business Affairs Director for a music software technology company. Although she was enjoying both Amsterdam and her job, she missed working in fashion and living in Bali. After two years and a half in the Netherlands, that’s exactly where she went back to!
Marie-Lorraine Wright is still based in Bali and continues working as a designer for her own label Mariel’s Boudoir. In the last 10 months she has designed “I love NYC”, a S/S 2014 collection of 25 pieces weighting less than 22 kilos. Ideal for women who travel a lot and want to be ready for any occasion, be it in New York, Paris or Saint Tropez.
Mariel’s approach to life in a nutshell: if you are not happy with life take the risk, move forward! Which is what she is doing now. Earlier this year, during a trip to Amsterdam, she was approached by Amsterdam Fashion TV for a new project. With her international background, glamorous lifestyle, experience in journalism and passion for fashion, Marie-Lorraine Wright is the perfect host for Amsterdam Fashion TV’s new column “Bali Beautiful”!
