Today I sat down with Hollywood power couple Baz Lurhmann and Catherine Martin to talk about 1920s style and their film The Great Gatsby. The dynamic director-costume designer duo collaborated on possibly the most beautiful film of the summer, and they just can’t quit painting the world all shades of Gatsby.
This morning I was lucky enough to get a preview of their new Gatsby-themed room at New York City’s famed Plaza Hotel. It’s the perfect setting for the baubles and jaw-dropping gowns from the film. While it’s not quite in my budget to stay there (it’s $2,800 a night!), it is something amazing to see!
Catherine said she didn’t want to recreate the film inside this suite. Instead, she used it as inspiration. “I thought it would be great to create a room that felt like F. Scott Fitzgerald’s writing nook” she said. “Where he could have written something with a glamorous 1920s luxurious feel. We put in objects that related to the film, including lots of historical photography from the Conde Nast archive.”
The hotel room may not be exactly like the movie, but I wondered if she had a favorite fashion scene from Gatsby to draw upon. She started to laugh, thinking of a few costumes she might change. “There are lots of moments when I wanted to crawl under my chair,” she said. “Things like why didn’t we pull up Tobey’s pants?”
I didn’t notice any issues with Tobey’s pants, but you can see for yourself now, as the movie just came out in Blu-ray 3-D.
