Nigerian Hairstyles in picture

Fashion trends change, and so do hairstyles! At Amsterdam Fashion TV we were lucky enough to stumble over the amazing collection of pictures by Nigerian photographer J.D. Okhai Ojeikere. All with the same subject: unique hairstyles found in Nigeria.

Born in 1930 in a rural South Western Nigeria village, during the 1960es and 1970es J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere documented more than 1,000 stunning sculptural hairdos he spotted in the streets, at wedding celebrations, in offices. “An opportunity to devote myself to Nigerian culture, to which I am deeply attached”, said the photographer himself. The collection of shots is called Hairstyles and includes an incredible assortment of braids, buns, ringlets, curls, and twists. It stands both as a creative work of art and as a record of Nigerian trends and culture.
