From London Fashion Week: Mary Katrantzou

Mary Katrantzou is definitely one of the young designers that stands out the most at London Fashion Week. Born in Athens, Mary studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and completed a BA and MA at London’s Central Saint Martins. She presented her first collection at London Fashion Week in 2011, the same year she won the “Emerging Talent – Ready-to-Wear award” at the British Fashion Awards.

Mary Katrantzou has a liberated spirit and a hyperrealist aesthetic. She likes bold prints, psichedelic patterns and trompe l’oeil effects. This year Mary presented a bold collection, in a colour palette that has been toned down compared to previous seasons, showing her ability to edit yet to stay true to her own aestetics.

Among Mary’s prints are enlarged details of men’s brogues in polished leather and trainers with flashes of colour and vinyl inserts. And then flowers, flowers, flowers. There was so much going on in each piece and a big range: from sleeveless bikers with scuba zip to cocktail mini dresses bursting with pleats or with explosions of origami-like folds at the bust.

At Amsterdam Fashion TV we love this designer. How about you?
