Trendspotting: The 5 Most Rule-Breaking Looks From the Met Ball Red Carpet

Before the Met Ball started last night, I was worried that I’d eventually succumb to ball-gown overload. (After all, this year’s exhibit celebrates American couturier Charles James, and there was even an Anna Wintour-mandated white-tie dress code for men.) But then, partway through the celebrity rush on the red carpet, I started wishing there were more billowy, glamorous, over-the-top ball gowns. But then I realized, hey, this is fashion and rules are meant to be broken. That’s how trends start in the first place! So let’s take a look at the much-discussed, gasp-inducing looks from last night and ponder—could these be the new trends for formal occasions this summer?

Glamour Style Icon and Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o probably made the biggest statement of the evening in a custom Prada creation with lots goin’ on: netting, beading, crystal embellishments, feathers, and a matching headband. Whew. Lesson learned: If you’re going to take a fashion risk at one of the most high-profile events of the year, own it. And clearly, she did.

At this point, crop tops on a black-tie red carpet really aren’t much of a shocker anymore. But Rihanna still managed to make a statement in her custom Stella McCartney ensemble that featured a scooped cut for the top and a long dramatic train on the skirting.

Leather is the new ball gown? If designer Joseph Altuzarra and actress Michelle Monaghan have anything to say about it!

And proving again that models really can wear anything, anywhere, Cara Delevingne rocked a cropped, strappy, and cutout top and pants by Stella McCartney to a couture-themed Met Ball. Hey, better than sweats, right?

Short is the new long when it comes to the most formal of formal wear, if the guests at the Met Gala have anything to say about it. On the chic-violator list: Michelle Williams, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Elizabeth Olsen in this sheer-shoulder, crystal-embellished Miu Miu dress.
