Kate Mara and Stylist Johnny Wujek Take on Cool New Roles at H&M for New York Fashion Week

To kick of New York fashion week, H&M, Kate Mara, and stylist Johnny Wujek designed ten H&M store windows in various cities throughout the U.S using H&M Studio fall 2014 pieces. While the House of Cards actress is clearly a style star to watch, Johnny is more of a behind-the-scenes guy. In fact, he’s the man behind some of our favorite red carpet looks from Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, and Kate Mara. I caught up with the duo to chat about fall trends and why it’s always awesome to work with your best friend.

Q: Tell me a little about your inspiration and how it was to work with H&M?

Kate Mara: We felt like it was very New York so that was easy for us because I’m from New York and we get so much inspiration from walking around in New York together. I love casual street style that you can then bring into the evening. There were a lot of pieces in the collection that you can dress up or dress down so that was sort of the main thing for me that I loved so much about this collection.

Q: What is one piece you think every woman should pick up?

KM: Well what I’m wearing now, I’m wearing it as a dress, but I love the fact that you can use it as a jacket it’s just something—

Johnny Wujek: Versatile.

KM: Yeah, very versatile.

JW: Versatile pieces are always great.

Q: Definitely. Kate, you got to take on a new job as curator and window designer with this collaboration. If you had to choose any other job, and same question for you Johnny, aside from stylist and aside from actress, what would it be?

KM: Oh my God, I’d be really miserable if I couldn’t be an actor. And I could never be a stylist either, so maybe something like a casting director? Because that’s something again—it all has to do with acting and stuff so if I had to maybe it would be somewhere in the casting of movies and things.

Q: What about you Johnny?

JW: If I wasn’t a stylist, I mean in the creative world I’d want to be a photographer or director, which I sort of am. But I think I would sort of flip the switch, because my life is so crazy and so busy and so go-go-go that I would want to just like, move to Montana, and like open up a hardware store and be super chill. Just switch it, ya know, because sometimes it gets to be a little much.

Q: Sure! You guys have been working together for years now. Kate, what is the best tip that you’ve picked up from Johnny and Johnny, what have you learned from Kate?

KM: Well I think one of the reasons why we’re so close as friends and why we still love to work together is that we’re both so comfortable with just being ourselves with each other. Our style is very different but I never feel like I can’t totally be honest and I think Johnny feels the same way. That’s what makes it really easy. I mean with red carpet dresses and things there’s never really a lot of time we spend deciding what to wear because I’m very decisive and I know what I feel comfortable in.

JW: And we’re always pre-gaming. It’s like I’ll send pictures, she sends me pictures. We’re talking about what we like prior so I don’t have to show up with racks and racks— it’s very easy.

KM: Yeah it’s really easy.

Q: Switching gears to fall trends, Johnny, what would you like to see Kate try and Kate what are you looking forward to trying?

JW: Well the thing I love about Kate is she’s so tiny but she loves— like this jacket for example kind of oversized, menswear chunky sweaters, I’m obsessed with all chunky knits so I mean, there’s nothing I want her to try that she’s not already doing. I love her style and I love what she does. I just feel like, keep it going. I would never want to put her into something she’s not into.

KM: He would love it if I wore that faux fur coat but I refuse.

JW: That will happen by the end of the day.

Q: Kate, are there any trends that you’re looking forward to trying this season?

KM: Right now I’m all about comfort. I used to be a heel girl and now to wear heels is like ‘ugh, gosh no!’. I’m all about the flat. I’m obsessed with any kind of oxford shoe.

Q: Cool! Who are you shoes by today?

KM: These are Louis Vuitton But I’m all about —H&M even has really awesome shoes and flats. So I’m all about comfort right now.
