Will Christian Louboutin Start Designing Clothing?

He’s launched a shoe collection, a bag line, a nail range, and even a selection of lipsticks, but would Christian Louboutin ever move into designing clothes?

Sadly, the shoe master has announced it won’t happen. “I would consider many things before clothing,” he told WWD. “Even home would be more interesting to me, rather than something that is worn.”

The proclamation follows the news from earlier this week that he’s launching lipstick later this year: 38 shades in total, including an iconic red that ought to look awfully familiar. They’re estimated to ring up at $90 (perhaps not surprising when you remember his nail polish is $50).

But back to clothing. Louboutin says he prefers small to big, making shoes and bags much more appealing than dresses, pants, and coats. “I like small objects. In a small painting you have so much to see because there’s so much detail,” he said. “My father was a carpenter, so I love objects that are really designed. A small object can have as much invention and as much innovation as something big.”

It would also seem that the designer doesn’t have much time to dive into ready-to-wear. He likes to dedicate energy to his current offerings and spends extensive time four times a year working on future shoes, traveling alone to Egypt, Portugal, or the French countryside.

“That needs a lot of time and I need a lot of focus. It’s the most important part of my job. I never wanted to build a company. I wanted to build shoes.”
