The Netherlands has a new cultural event at: Masterly The Hague. A festival where historical Dutch masterpieces and Dutch Design come together. In the royal city of The Hague, three monumental buildings on the Hofvijver are the setting for this.
Prinsjesdag in style
Around Prinsjesdag these buildings open their doors to the public and during four days in 25 period rooms it is a celebration of beauty and craftsmanship. 55 designers, photographers and artists of today choose an Old Master as muse in consultation with the initiator Nicole Uniquole. Inspired by their historical muse, they create a new contemporary design.
Old Masters and new Dutch Design
This pas de deux between new and old leads to surprising insights into the beauty of art. For example, the haute couture of fashion designers Viktor & Rolf forms a fascinating combination with the armor and the opulent collar on Frederik Hendrik’s painting. Michiel van Mierevelt portrayed him before he became Prince of Orange in 1625. The meters high metal flowers of Linda Nieuwstad refer to the roses in a 17th century portrait by Jurriaan Ovens. And that of Lucia Wybrands, then the richest woman in Amsterdam. Photographer duo Petra and Erik Hesmerg show photos at a beautiful still life by the extremely rare painter, J. M. Sartory.
Four days of celebration
From 20 to 23 September, not only will the new work of contemporary designers, photographers and artists be seen with their muse, but also themselves. They are approachable to the public. Because of their vision of the historical paintings, this provides the visitor with a unique discovery of beauty and craftsmanship.
Temporary cultural department store
When the red carpet is rolled out at the Lange Vijverberg, the public can get acquainted with art and culture of unprecedented levels. Including a number of unprecedented historical paintings from the collections of art collector Dr. Abraham Bredius, from art dealership Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder and from painter Cornelis Kruseman. All presented Dutch Design can not only be admired, it is also for sale.

Masterly The Hague is a new annual festival, accessible to the public. Historical paintings are combined with works specially made for the occasion by contemporary designers, artists and photographers.
The Masterly The Hague Foundation is an initiative of Nicole Uniquole and Willem Jan Hoogsteder. Curator Nicole Uniquole and Maarten Spruyt (art direction and styling) previously signed for Dutch Design – House of Orange in Oranienbaum, Royal Showpieces at Het Loo Palace and Masterly – the Dutch in Milano at Palazzo Francesco Turati. Willem Jan Hoogsteder is a connoisseur of Dutch and Flemish masters from the 17th century. With art dealership Hoogsteder & Hoogsteder he produced paintings for more than 150 museum exhibitions all over the world.
