“Thoughts of Thought”
Dutch Design by Kiki van Eijk “opens May 29, 2020
The Dutch designer Kiki van Eijk is known for her imaginative designs: from whimsical clocks to tapestries for Google and poetic shop windows for the French luxury brand Hermès. Together with stage designer Theun Mosk, she is creating an exhibition in the Textile Museum in Tilburg that appeals to multiple senses. “Thoughts of Thought | Dutch Design by Kiki van Eijk “can be seen from Friday 29 May to 1 November 2020.
Kiki van Eijk has been making a distinctive contribution to internationally acclaimed Dutch Design for 20 years. As part of its 20-year anniversary, the TextielMuseum presents highlights from its oeuvre in a special way. For the exhibition, the designer works together with stage designer and spatial designer Theun Mosk. Mosk is lauded for his eye-catching designs for theater productions and autonomous installations. Together they challenge visitors to discover the work of Kiki van Eijk in a playful way. In one room the visitor takes a look in a peephole to see her designs, in the other one can zoom in on sketches of her work with cameras. By not only showing, but also doing and hearing, the poetic oeuvre of Kiki van Eijk unfolds through the exhibition.
The exhibition shows a rich diversity of design products from the Eindhoven designer: from colorful wall hangings and luxury textile objects to furniture, clocks and lamps. The work of Kiki van Eijk starts from a lively curiosity, where she works in an investigative way. She experiments with different materials and production methods, whether it is glass, ceramics, bronze or textile. This versatile craftsmanship yields wonderful and quirky design that allows the viewer to look at everyday objects and objects differently. Van Eijk’s interest in material and technology regularly brought her to the TextielMuseum, where craftsmanship, experimentation and the making process are central. In the TextielLab, the museum’s specialist workplace, many of her textile works were created.
From Eindhoven to Coachella
In the year 2000 Kiki van Eijk graduated cum laude from the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven. Her design products have since been seen in museums, galleries and at fairs worldwide, from Milan and Paris to Tokyo and New York. In addition to her own collections, Van Eijk designed for Studio Edelkoort, MOOOI, Saint-Louis and other prominent clients. It was recently announced that the designer was asked to develop an art installation for the upcoming Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in the United States.
